Individual Psychology is used to refer to the psychology of Alfred Adler. Alfred Adler’s work is a value-based fully-integrated theory of personality; it encourages the development of psychologically healthy and cooperative individual, couples and families in order to effectively pursue the ideas of social equality and democratic living. Individual psychology is so named to emphasize the understanding that a person is indivisible, meaning that people should be treated holistically. It emphasis that people are individual beings in need of harmony within as well as social beings seeking harmony in relationship with others in all aspects of their lives. The hope of individual psychology is that through encouraging people to strive for socially beneficial goals, they will not only make valuable contributions to society but will also achieve happiness as individuals.
The relevance of this theory to the Nigerian school child’s situation is that there is a relationship between the satisfaction, social interest and the student’s participation in extracurricular activities. When asked to list the number of extracurricular activities that they engage in since their enrollment in the secondary schools, we will discover that there is a significant relationship between the students level of participate in social/ extracurricular activities and the student’s level off satisfactory with friends and family. Hence, schools and parents should pay more attention and encourage students to engage in meaningful extracurricular activities. Also it is observed that social problems at adulthood are results of children developing with feelings of inferiority
